Infection and Immune Support

with IV therapy in Calgary

A healthy and robust immune system is exceptionally important for our overall health and well-being. We live in a world rife with immune challenges, not the least of which are numerous infectious agents such as bacteria, fungi, and most commonly – viruses. Ranging from the common cold to more severe microbiological adversaries, our immune system plays a critical role in our defense and long-term vitality.

What are the signs of an unhealthy immune system?

Our immune system plays a crucial role in our health and wellness. This complex network of cells and signaling molecules primarily protects us from harmful infections. However, it plays other important roles as well – such as helping to coordinate healing and repair of damaged tissues, or clearing dead, damaged or toxic material from our bodies. If our immune system weakens, for a myriad of reasons, it is not able to adequately support us in these ways.

  • Symptoms from colds and flus seem to linger a lot longer than they normally do.
  • More frequent infections (consistently catching colds, flus, and other ‘bugs’)
  • Daily energy seems to be much lower than it used to be.
  • Minor wounds and injuries – such as cuts, scrapes, burns or bruises – are much slower to heal.
  • Digestive issues – such as gas, bloating, diarrhea or constipation – may be present.

The Meyers Cocktail formula

Through the myriad of applications of intravenous therapy, one of the most widely applied and effective uses is within the realm of immune support. These formulas are built upon the original Myers Cocktail formula, which was first used in the 1970s and popularized in the early 2000s. They often contain larger doses of vitamins, minerals, and other compounds with the aim of enhancing immune function and optimizing nutrient levels. While many of these items can be found within supplements taken by mouth, as with most compounds when introduced intravenously demonstrate higher plasma concentrations of these constituents that wouldn’t be possible if taken orally, and therefore can result in pronounced physiological effects.

IV Therapy for immune function

While each ingredient within an IV formula serves a distinct purpose, within the context of immune function there are a few “stars of the show”: Vitamin C and Glycyrrhizic acid.

Vitamin C IV therapy

When administered intravenously, Vitamin C can achieve plasma concentrations well above levels possible by oral supplements. For contrast, a 2004 study examined the maximally tolerated oral vitamin C dose vs. a large intravenous dose, demonstrating an 8-fold difference in plasma concentration and 140-fold difference in urine concentration when excreted. When intravenous Vitamin C reaches plasma concentrations above 10mg/dL, it has been shown to have an anti-viral effect. With larger Vitamin C doses (25-50g per treatment), it is possible to achieve plasma concentrations between 100 and 150mg/dL.

Glycyrrhizic Acid IV therapy

This compound – a biologically active, extract saponin of the licorice plant (Glycyrriza glabra) – is a remarkably versatile addition to an IV formula. Glycyrrhizic acid shown to inhibit the growth, replication and pathological activity of numerous RNA and DNA viruses (including Hepatitis, Herpes, Cytomegalovirus and more!) It exhibits anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting enzymes such as cyclooxygenase-2 and signalling molecules as prostagaldin E2. It also demonstrates protective effects for the liver, which can be of great benefit with respect to certain infections or in combination with drugs.
